Kavulich dies following surgery complications, age 62

Rep. Sid Michaels Kavulich (D-Lackawanna) passed away Tuesday from complications from heart surgery. He had been hospitalized earlier this month.

Lawmakers remembered him as someone who never let Harrisburg change a welcoming personality much, and for pristine health before the surgery.

His passing is also the second in as many days, third in the last three months, and fourth of the session to afflict the Democratic caucus.

Republicans question residency of top Democratic senate candidate

A lawsuit filed by two district residents, including the chair of a local Republican committee, alleges that a Democratic candidate for state Senate is ineligible to run or be seated if she wins.

The suit, filed Monday, claims that Lindsey Williams, the Democratic candidate in Allegheny County’s 38th Senatorial District, missed the state’s four-year residency requirement by about two months.

Williams, a former teachers’ union official, is running against Republican Jeremy Shaffer, a local township commissioner who beat incumbent Sen. Randy Vulakovich (R-Allegheny) in the May primary.

O'Brien passes away following heart attack

After numerous health battles, Rep. Michael O'Brien (D-Philadelphia) passed away of a heart attack early this morning. He was 64 years old.

Lawmakers remembered O'Brien as a passionate and conscientious lawmaker who stood up for his Old City district by winning education and development dollars as well as fighting for equality well before identity became a Democratic plank.

Wolf signs firearm restrictions for domestic absuers

After years of advocate energy and two bipartisan votes brought it to his desk, Friday evening Gov. Tom Wolf signed a bill restructuring domestic abusers' access to firearms.

Previously, final PFA recipients had 60 days to hand over their firearms when required by a judge, and could hand them off to friends and family.
