Medical marijuana supporters emboldened by Quinnipiac poll

A Quinnipiac University poll released Monday morning shows Pennsylvanians support the legalization of medical marijuana by a 88 to 10 margin.

Not surprisingly, legislators sponsoring proposals to legalize medical marijuana responded positively to the poll’s results.

“You can’t get much higher in a poll than 88 percent,” said Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery), co-prime sponsor of Senate Bill 3, that chamber’s legalization proposal also sponsored by Sen. Mike Folmer (R-Lebanon). “These numbers are as close to unanimous as you get in politics.

Compromise on “paycheck protection?”

It appears as though Senators are coalescing around a more moderate proposal to advance so-called “paycheck protection” legislation.

While an unamended proposal in the form of Senate Bill 501 moved out of the Senate State Government Committee Wednesday that would prohibit the Commonwealth and public school from collecting union dues from employee paychecks, members spoke of an amendment that would limit the scope of the proposal.

Rep. Santarsiero Calls for Eating Disorder Education in Schools

Rep. Steve Santarsiero (D-Bucks) unveiled legislation today that would require school districts to share information about eating disorders in fifth through 12th grades.

HB 1959 includes guidelines that would allow school boards to voluntarily develop an eating disorder screening program, specify training requirements for personnel and volunteers, and provide the framework for parental notification procedures in the event of a positive indication of an eating disorder. Rep. Santarsiero was joined by Sen. Chuck McIlhinney (R-Bucks) and Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery) in introducing this legislation in the Capitol media center.
