Governor demands vote on pension reform

Gov. Tom Corbett Thursday took the unusual step of heading to the Capitol Newsroom to call the General Assembly to vote on pension reform, citing concerns over the Commonwealth’s debt rating.

“This is not a partisan issue, this is a taxpayer issue,” he said. “In addition to giving us a little more room and save money for the people of Pennsylvania in the long run, [it] deals with our credit-worthiness in this country and deals with the rating agencies.”

Gov. Corbett noted credit rating agencies have been looking at Pennsylvania to determine whether they will downgrade the Commonwealth’s rating because of the instability of the pension issue.

House sends $29.1 billion budget to Senate as negotiations continue

After nearly three hours of debate Wednesday, the House of Representatives sent a $29.1 billion spending plan to the Senate for consideration by a 110-93 vote.

During the debate on final passage, Republicans noted the difficult nature of this year’s budget in the loss of federal funds and lackluster revenue, but praised the budget for increasing education, public welfare, and environmental spending.
