Two Pennsylvania cabinet-level officials have expressed concern in recent days about how the budget bill crafted by the House Republicans and passed largely along a party-line vote last month will affect the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, and the Department of Education.

Revenue outlook might signal mayday for PA budget crafters

The first week of May saw worse news after bad for Pennsylvania’s General Fund revenue collections that could potentially lead to a larger-than-anticipated budget deficit for the coming fiscal year.

 

Monday, the state Department of Revenue reported fiscal-year-to-date revenues are currently $1.2 billion behind estimate after April’s collections were released and the Independent Fiscal Office on Tuesday signaled weak economic growth in Pennsylvania, coupled with a potential shift in the realization of income into next year, has caused a downward revision in their revenue estimates for the current and coming fiscal years.

House sends Senate $31.52 billion budget bill

The House of Representatives Tuesday voted largely along party-line vote of 114-84 to send the Senate a $31.52 billion spending plan, despite not having an articulated, supportable plan for funding it.

 

"This is a responsible, sustainable budget for FY 2017-2018," said House Appropriations Majority Chairman Stan Saylor (R-York). "It's a departure from past years and a good first step in the direction of reinventing government."

House Republicans set to push through $31.52 billion budget this week

House Republicans Monday unveiled a budget plan they intend to send to the Senate this week with a final spending number ringing in at $31.52 billion, a number more than $800 million below what Gov. Tom Wolf proposed in February and just under $250 million shy of the current year’s spend number.
