Capitol Quick Hits for 6.17.14

Here are the highlights from news conferences, rallies, and advocacy days held in the Capitol today:

  • A coalition of environmental advocates rallied in the Main Capitol Rotunda to protest a recent executive order issued by Gov. Tom Corbett that they feel has opened up state park and forest land to additional drilling operations. Rep. Greg Vitali (D-Delaware) cited Article 1, Section 27 of the Pennsylvania Constitution, which reads “The people have a right to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic and aesthetic values of the environment.”
  • Advocates and members rallied in the Main Capitol Rotunda to raise awareness for individuals with Sickle Cell Anemia. Those in attendance were Joseph Robinson, Jr., Executive Director of the South Central Pennsylvania Sickle Cell Council, Dr. Kim Smith-Whitley, Medical Director of the Sickle Cell Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Trudy Johnson, LSW at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Andrea Williams, Executive Director of the Children’s Sickle Cell Foundation, Inc, and Rep. Stephen Kinsey (D-Philadelphia).
  • Rep. Ryan Bizzarro (D-Erie) and Sen. Rob Teplitz (D-Dauphin) held a press conference to emphasize the need to further support Pennsylvania veterans by establishing veterans courts statewide. Rep. Bizzarro said there is an inability of Pennsylvania’s criminal justice system to deal effectively with servicemen and women who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He described the system, saying veterans charged with nonviolent crimes would receive treatment and appear before a judge periodically; the charges would be dropped if the judge is satisfied at the end of the veteran’s treatment.
  • Hundreds of advocates and service providers rallied in the Main Capitol Rotunda today to call for more funding for mental health, intellectual disability, autism, rehabilitation, brain injury, and addiction care. Those in attendance were Kathy Manderino, Senior Vice President at Intercommunity Action Inc., Richard Edley, President and CEO of the Rehabilitation and Community Providers Association (RCPA), Rep. Gene DiGirolamo (R-Bucks), Rep. Tom Murt (R-Montgomery), Rep. Pam DeLissio (D-Philadelphia), Rep. Mike Sturla (D-Lancaster), Rep. Mark Longietti (R-Mercer), and Rep. Bryan Barbin (D- Cambria).

  • Lt. Gov. Jim Cawley, Secretary of Aging Brian Duke, and several legislators held a press conference in the East Wing Rotunda to draw awareness to elder abuse in Pennsylvania by announcing Elder Abuse Awareness Month. Sec. Duke explained that the theme of Elder Abuse Awareness Month is: One Person, One Action, One State United Against Elder Abuse. He discussed how Pennsylvania is working to combat elder abuse through the state’s 55 Area Agencies on Aging (AAA’s) and network of elder abuse task forces.
