Capitol Quick Hits for 6.26.14

Here are the highlights from news conferences, rallies, and advocacy days held in the Capitol today:

  • Several natural gas industry organizations held a teleconference to discuss the potential economic impacts of a severance tax, which is being discussed as part of the 2014-2015 state budget. Associated Petroleum Industries of Pennsylvania (API-PA), the Pennsylvania Independent Oil and Gas Association (PIOGA), and the Marcellus Shale Coalition (MSC) were represented on the call.
  •  Education advocates from various parts of the state gathered in the Main Rotunda of the Capitol this afternoon to speak against the House-approved budget that was recently passed through HB 2328. Donna Cooper, Executive Director of Public Citizens for Children and Youth, expressed outrage that the House passed a budget that cut education spending by two-thirds of what was offered in Gov. Corbett’s initial proposal.
  • Education activists held a press conference in the Capitol Rotunda to kick off a sit-in to protest cuts to public education in this year’s budget. Helen Gym, member of Philadelphia’s Parents United for Public Education, said the activists are attending the rally to send a message to the members of the General Assembly that are unhappy with the budget proposed by the House of Representatives.
