Kenyatta hopes to protect Pennsylvania from digital threats

With the state of Pennsylvania facing a rising number of cyberattack threats, Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta (D-Philadelphia) hopes one of his newest bills will bolster state protections by establishing a Cybersecurity Innovation Commission.  

The commission would be charged with conducting regular cybersecurity audits, enhancing security and privacy standards as well as analyzing cybersecurity protocols. Kenyatta says the commission would help centralize cybersecurity protections across state government, offering a more streamlined system.

One senator wants Education Savings Accounts for special needs students but school districts worry about funding effects

Students with special needs and those who are deemed gifted and talented would have access to education savings accounts under a bill proposed by Sen. Judy Ward (R-Blair), but there are concerns that such a bill could hinder special education efforts in public schools.

Consistent with how the controversial school choice tool has functioned elsewhere, the proposal would create accounts for students, into which the state would then deposit a set portion of its per-pupil subsidy.

City Council passes resolutions to send messages to Harrisburg

City Council passed some bills and resolutions Thursday before inviting Mayor Jim Kenney (D) to join them for the annual budget address. Among them were two resolution aimed at the capitol.

Council passed a resolution calling on the General Assembly to give more local control over traffic rules and enforcement. They also passed one supporting the efforts of Pittsburgh’s City Council to reduce gun violence and back common-sense gun legislation.
