Allegheny County unveils record expungement and sealing program

On the heels of Pennsylvania’s Clean Slate initiative, closer to home local public defenders and elected officials have decided to give Allegheny County residents who have had brushes with the law a shot at a fresh start. 

Realizing that an arrest can create barriers to housing and employment, former public defender now Judge Elliot Howsie, wanted to give his former clients second chances that wouldn’t be tainted by the stigma of a criminal record. To that end he decided to work with County-Executive, the Public Defender's office, and others to create the Project Reset program.

Philadelphia announces Hepatitis A outbreak

The City of Philadelphia declared a public health emergency last Thursday to address the massive increase in Hepatitis A cases. 
 
The declaration released by the Department of Health claimed there were 154 cases of acute Hepatitis A this year. 85 percent of that total have been diagnosed since May.

Dems renew call for special session on gun control while key Republicans preach patience

Democrats again appealed to Gov. Tom Wolf Wednesday to call a special session on gun control, following recent mass shootings in Texas and Ohio, as well as sustained gun violence in Philadelphia and the Lehigh Valley.

At least one Republican has joined that call, with Rep. Wendi Thomas (R-Bucks) telling The PLS Reporter Tuesday that she supported lawmakers returning early from their summer break to address the matter.
