Organizers and elected officials confront UPMC board at tension-filled meeting

Once a year, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s board members host a public meeting for patients and the public to testify and to gain a better understanding of how decisions are made. With tension over labor unions rising and a consent decree set to expire in weeks, activists, workers on strike, patients, and a gaggle of elected officials on Tuesday took the meeting as a chance to air their grievances about the health enterprise’s labor practices and, in their opinion, less than charitable behavior.

However, in the blazing sun and with looming security at UPMC Montefiore Hospital, where the meeting was held, the crowd of 150 would find that easier said than done.

Citizens weigh in on PA Redistricting Reform Committee

Cute shape names and stories about “wrong signs” across the street peppered the PA Redistricting Reform Committee meeting Tuesday. Voters and advocates from across the Delaware Valley gathered at Philadelphia’s Tindley Temple United Methodist Church to discuss how to fix the state’s map. The committee meeting served as an opportunity for citizens to interact directly with the members and offer suggestions.

Wolf resists call from Republicans to send National Guard troops to border

Gov. Tom Wolf is pushing back on a call from Republicans to deploy National Guard troops to the US-Mexico border, labeling it a "stunt" in a radio interview and arguing the manpower is needed as the commonwealth enters its typically stormy summer months.

In a letter last week, five Pennsylvania Republican Congressmen sent a letter to Wolf urging him to support President Donald Trump’s plea for more manpower to help monitor the southern border.
