Bipartisan group of lawmakers pushes for Pennsylvania to join other states in reforming probation guidelines

Mirroring bipartisan efforts in over 30 other states, lawmakers from both parties unveiled a bill aimed at reducing the number of Pennsylvanians on probation Monday at the state Capitol.

Senate Bill 14 would standardize guidelines issued to county probation officers as to what constitutes a technical parole violation. It would also aim to curb those technical violations, cap the total length of probation ordered for a defendant and allow termination of parole for those who demonstrate good behavior.

Sen. Daylin Leach files suit against women accusing him of sexual assault, two others

State Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery) filed a defamation suit Monday against three women in relation to accusations that he forced an underage woman to perform oral sex in 1991.

The move comes after Senate Democrats announced last week they would hire outside investigators to probe the allegations against Leach by Cara Taylor, then the 17-year-old daughter of a woman Leach was defending in a criminal case.

Philly Dems select new candidate for 190th special election

Democrats selected Movita Johnson-Harrell Sunday as their candidate for the 190th House district special election in March, according to sources familiar with the process.

 

The party leaders had to choose a new candidate after Darryl Thomas withdrew his name from nomination early Saturday morning. He was the second person linked to consideration torpedoed over residency concerns.

House Republicans call on Rep. Ellis to resign over sexual assault allegation

House GOP leaders are calling on one of their members, Rep. Brian Ellis (R-Butler), to resign following reports that the Dauphin County District Attorney is investigating a sexual assault allegation against the lawmaker.

The Philadelphia Inquirer first reported Thursday afternoon that Ellis was under investigation for allegedly having sex with a woman at his Harrisburg residence without her consent and while she was incapacitated. The incident allegedly took place in October of 2015.
