Lawmakers roll out bipartisan licensure reform bill

Fresh off the passage of the Clean Slate Act in 2018, a bipartisan group of state lawmakers are looking to build off their criminal justice reform victory and remove employment barriers for former offenders. 

Senators John DiSanto (R-Dauphin) and Judy Schwank (D-Berks) were joined by House Minority Whip Rep. Jordan Harris (D-Philadelphia) and Rep. Sheryl Delozier (R-Cumberland) Wednesday to stump for an occupational licensure reform bill that would prohibit state boards from denying professional licenses based on past criminal convictions that are unrelated to the profession.

Auditor General DePasquale requests travel details after authorized Pittsburgh Public Schools trip

What started out as professional development trip has landed Pittsburgh Public Schools administrators in hot water. When it was revealed that Superintendent Anthony Hammel and his deputies made an unauthorized detour to Cuba eyebrows were raised and last week an investigation into the finances and ethics involved was launched. 

And now, Auditor General Eugene DePasquale is stepping in. Locally, the district and taxpayers are concerned the administrators involved violated policies on not accepting gifts from outside venders. DePasquale has some questions too and Monday requested that the district provide details on travel by the district and what contracts were used without seeking bids.

VIDEO: Madden and McNeill push to join other states in banning pet leasing

Rep. Maureen Madden (D-Monroe) and Rep. Jeanie McNeill (D-Lehigh) are working on legislation that would ban pet leasing in Pennsylvania. 

Pet leasing is the practice of leasing a pet to a customer on a contract basis. Those who get hooked into these contracts end up paying far more than the original price of the pet due to fees.
