With Scarnati's support, most legislative leadership now behind redistricting

In addressing the state press club Monday, Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson) showed an two month turnaround in attitude among legislative leadership.

While he echoed Republican colleagues in a scathing denouncement of the state Supreme Court, he also shared a reluctant acknowledgment of the need to reform redistricting.

Over the weekend, a vote on a controversial bill to create education savings accounts for low income Pennsylvanians was added to a Senate Education Committee meeting set for Tuesday morning.

The bill, SB 2, is now on the committee calendar for the fourth time since last fall as Republicans have tried to rally votes.

Rabb bill would protect people in police custody from sexual assault

Rep. Chris Rabb (D-Philadelphia) is pushing to close a loophole that he says exposes citizens to sexual assault while in police custody.

“Police officers are supposed to use their authoritative power to protect the public, not prey on the innocent,” Rabb said. “I find it ludicrous that this major oversight in our legal system has received such minor attention. Everyone has rights and no one deserves this type of mistreatment, no matter what your criminal history.”
