Senators focus on mental illness and opioid epidemic during Corrections budget hearing

Senate Appropriation Committee members focused on how the Department of Corrections (DOC) handles mentally ill inmates and inmates struggling with addiction during Thursday’s budget hearing.


DOC asked for an addition $2 million dollars in this year’s proposed budget.


According to DOC Sec. John Wetzel the extra $2 million would help to treat inmates with varying mental health issues.

On the first day of Women’s History Month, Pittsburgh unveiled its Gender Equity Commission at a press conference Thursday.

The commission, authorized by legislation signed by Mayor Bill Peduto last year, will now attempt to “dismantle gender inequities in our city” according to commission Executive Director anupama jain.
