DePasquale gives recommendations after district justices wrongfully give out criminal records

Auditor General Eugene DePasquale held a press conference Monday morning to announce recommendations and a call for action to ensure that Pennsylvania's district justices are not wrongfully giving people a criminal record for offences that should be classified as civil violations. 

DePasquale released an audit that showed in an Erie County District Court a former district justice incorrectly filed criminal charges for theft of services in situations that should have been civil complaints.

Allegheny County unveils record expungement and sealing program

On the heels of Pennsylvania’s Clean Slate initiative, closer to home local public defenders and elected officials have decided to give Allegheny County residents who have had brushes with the law a shot at a fresh start. 

Realizing that an arrest can create barriers to housing and employment, former public defender now Judge Elliot Howsie, wanted to give his former clients second chances that wouldn’t be tainted by the stigma of a criminal record. To that end he decided to work with County-Executive, the Public Defender's office, and others to create the Project Reset program.

Legislators discuss legislation that would automate expungements

Rep. Joanna McClinton (D-Philadelphia) led a press conference Wednesday morning where she was joined by Rep. Tedd Nesbit (R-Mercer) and others to talk about legislation that would expunge a criminal record when a person has been fully acquitted of a charge or a pardon has been granted. 

McClinton and Nesbit have authored House Bill 440, while Senator Camera Bartolotta (R-Washington) has introduced its companion bill in the Senate.
