Bill to halt closure of Polk, White Haven centers put on hold

Despite passing the Senate last week, a bill to halt the proposed closing of two state centers has been put on hold to the chagrin of lawmakers from the affected areas.

The bill was set to be considered in the House Health Committee last Wednesday but House Speaker Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) appeared before the committee in an emotional meeting, requesting the bill be tabled until December.

Yudichak to register as independent, caucus with GOP in blow to Democratic hopes of re-taking Senate

Yudichak to register as independent, caucus with GOP in blow to Democratic hopes of re-taking Senate

Sen. John Yudichak, a moderate lawmaker from Luzerne County, announced Tuesday he would be leaving the Democratic party and changing his registration to independent, leaving Democrats short an important seat in their fight to retain control of the upper chamber.

Yudichak, who will now be caucusing with Republicans, said in a letter that the decision came as a result of the increasingly partisan nature of the General Assembly. He won re-election for a third Senate term last year in a district that is becoming increasingly conservative, including parts of rural Luzerne and Carbon counties.

Wetzel removed from review of prison closure after comments draw outcry from NEPA lawmakers

Corrections Secretary John Wetzel has been removed from the statutorily required review of SCI Retreat’s closure after offhand comments at a public hearing on the matter sparked a firestorm that involved three Democrats calling for him to be fired from his post.

J.J. Abbott, press secretary for Gov. Tom Wolf, confirmed that Wetzel will no longer be a part of the review process required under Act 133. In an effort to reboot the process, Wolf is also calling for additional public hearings to be held on the matter as part of a more thorough probe.

Despite Wolf opposition, both chambers move forward moratoriums on closing White Haven, Polk centers

Supporters of the White Haven and Polk state centers received a rare bit of good news Tuesday, as a last-ditch attempt to halt their closure gained committee approval despite a spokesperson for Gov. Tom Wolf saying he opposes the legislation.

Lawmakers from Venango and Luzerne counties, where Polk and White Haven are located respectively, vowed a legislative response after the Department of Human Services said in August that it would close the two facilities, citing the desire to transfer more patients to community-based care.
