Unemployment compensation amnesty program enters third week

The Department of Labor and Industry (L&I) held a series of conference calls Wednesday to discuss the Unemployment Compensation (UC) Amnesty Program, now in its third week.

L&I Executive Deputy Secretary Robert O’Brien—who will be taking over for Sec. Kathy Manderino after she starts her new stint on the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board August 1—fielded calls from reporters to discuss the program’s progress and offer insight into who is taking advantage of the opportunity.

L&I Sec. Manderino heading to Gaming Control Board

Gov. Tom Wolf announced Friday that Department of Labor and Industry Secretary Kathy Manderino will join the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board effective August 1, 2017.

 

Sec. Manderino will be replaced at the department by Executive Deputy Secretary Robert O’Brien.

Wagner, Manderino trade jabs over UC funding dispute at L&I budget hearing

Sen. Scott Wagner (R-York) and Labor and Industry Secretary Kathy Manderino traded jabs during the department’s Senate budget hearing Tuesday morning, as the spat between Senate Republicans and the Wolf administration over the failure to authorize UC call center service and infrastructure funding continues.

 

The failure to authorize the funding resulted in layoffs of nearly 500 employees and the closure of three unemployment compensation call centers around the state, as well as the Harrisburg overflow center.

Lawmaker, L&I secretary spar over effect of raising PA’s minimum wage

Acting Secretary of Labor and Industry Kathy Manderino was in front of the House Appropriations Committee Tuesday for her department’s budget hearing.

Among a number of topics discussed by Sec. Manderino and committee members, a wide gap surrounding the likely effects of raising Pennsylvania’s minimum wage between Republican members and the Democratic-secretary became apparent.
