Despite concerns over constitutionality, House committee advances bill empowering landlords

A House committee voted Tuesday to approve a bill which would speed up the timeline for landlords to carry out the eviction of their tenants, despite concerns that the measure might be unconstitutional.

Authored by Rep. Greg Rothman (R-Cumberland) and approved by the House Urban Affairs Committee on a party-line vote, HB 71 would require an order of possession be issued within two days of a tenant’s appeal window being exhausted if a judge sides with the landlord in an eviction case.
