City residents commend and criticize Pittsburgh climate plan at open forum

At an open forum Wednesday night, around 50 Pittsburghers shared concerns and gave praise to the city's climate action plan to City Council.

The draft report, originally released in September, is the city’s third iteration of a plan to address climate change and other environmental issues on a city-wide level.

The plan includes calls to cut the city’s greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050, divest the pension fund from fossil fuel industries, and reduce transportation emissions by 50 percent by 2030.

Pittsburgh City Council swears in new City Clerk

Pittsburgh City Council swore in Brenda Pree as the newest City Clerk on Tuesday, much to the dismay of two Councilwomen.

Councilwomen Theresa Kail-Smith (District 2) and Darlene Harris (District 1) were the sole negative votes on the nomination of Ms. Pree, a Mississippi native, citing their disapproval of proper consideration of Pittsburgh locals, especially long-time Deputy Clerk, Kim Clark, an African-American woman.

Philadelphia Councilman introduces legislation to ban “conversion therapy”

Philadelphia Councilman introduces legislation to ban “conversion therapy”

Adding on to state and local proposals already being floated, Philadelphia City Councilman Mark Squilla (District 1) introduced on Thursday a proposal that would ban so-called “conversion therapy” from being practiced on LGBTQ youths within the city.

“Conversion therapy,” also known as “reparative” or “ex-gay” therapy, is a practice whereby a mental health professional tries to alter a person’s sexual identity or sexual orientation.

According to a statement, the ban would not apply to mainstream therapies that facilitate support or acceptance of LGBTQ identities, social support or identity exploration, or that address unlawful conduct or unsafe sexual practices.
