House advances Down syndrome abortion ban, vote falls short of veto-proof majority

The House voted to Tuesday to approve a bill barring abortion on the basis of a Down syndrome diagnosis, though the measure earned far less bipartisan support than a similar proposal did last year.

HB 321, authored by Rep. Kate Klunk (R-York), would add Down syndrome to the list of reasons which a woman could not use in justifying an abortion. Proponents point to several European countries, most notably Iceland, which have nearly eradicated the syndrome after prenatal testing became more widespread.

Easier way to find life insurance policies introduced at press conference

Rep. Marguerite Quinn (R-Bucks) joined House Insurance Committee Chairman Tina Pickett (R-Bradford) and Insurance Commissioner Teresa Miller to announce a new service to help residents of the commonwealth find lost life insurance policies and to discuss the benefits.

Those whose family members may have passed and need to find the life insurance policy may go onto the insurance department consumer services bureau's website, fill out a form, and then if a policy is found they will be notified within 90 days.
