Gov. Wolf announces consolidation of some Department of Corrections, Board of Probation and Parole functions

Gov. Tom Wolf announced Thursday that his administration is moving ahead entering into an inter-departmental memorandum of understanding (MOU) that would merge the parole agent functions of the Department of Corrections and Board of Probation and Parole.

As SCI Pittsburgh comes to a close, plans for development and prison closure reform ramp up

Things are quietly winding down as the state correctional institution in Pittsburgh gets ready to permanently close its doors on June 30th. 

 

As of May 19th, there are zero inmates in the facility that once housed 1,921 convicted individuals, and only a few employees remain to finish out the closure process. Those remaining employees will begin their new assignments at surrounding facilities on May 21, according to the Department of Corrections (DOC).

Legislators express concerns about potential merger of Department of Corrections, Board of Probation and Parole in House committee hearing

The House Judiciary Committee held a public hearing Thursday to discuss another consolidation attempt from Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget proposal: the consolidation of the Department of the Department of Corrections and the Board of Probation and Parole.

This consolidation, under Senate Bill 522 and Senate Bill 523, would merge the two entities together, a system that a majority of other states use.

Sec. Wetzel presents Lebanon's Domestic Violence Intervention Center with nearly 4,000 cellphones

Corrections Secretary John Wetzel presented the Domestic Violence Intervention Center of Lebanon County nearly 4,000 cell phones. These phones have been seized from community corrections centers over the last two years and will go to help victims of domestic violence around the Commonwealth.

SCI Pittsburgh set to close at the end of June

In a Thursday morning press release, the Wolf administration announced that SCI Pittsburgh will close on June 30, 2017, saving the state a yearly cost of $81 million. 

Citing cost-saving measures in response to the state budget deficit and a reduction in the state’s prison population, the western Pennsylvania prison was on a list of five other facilities the Department of Corrections and Governor Wolf were contemplating shuttering- SCI Mercer in Mercer County, SCI Waymart in Wayne County, SCI Retreat in Luzerne County, and SCI Frackville in Schuylkill County.
