HDPC discusses bolstering sexual education

Experts and advocates joined legislators in Philadelphia last Thursday to discuss reforming Pennsylvania’s inconsistent standards on sexual education in compulsory schools.  

The House Democratic Policy Committee hearing took place at Thomas Jefferson University’s Center City campus. Rep. Brian Sims (D-Philadelphia) hosted in support of his House Bill 1586, which calls for “medically accurate and evidence-based” sex ed, creating guidelines for statewide instruction. Currently such curriculum varies district to district.

House Democratic Policy Committee hearing discusses transportation solutions

The diverse needs of transportation in southeastern Pennsylvania came into focus Wednesday at a House Democratic Policy Committee hearing in Souderton.
 
Rep. Steven Malagari (D-Montgomery) hosted the event in his district. The event brought together professionals and advocates from across the region. Officials from SEPTA discussed their plans to invest in new infrastructure, while township managers talked about the need to fund mandates for street travel, both by drivers and pedestrians.

Gun violence prevention hearing produces emotional testimony, bipartisan roadmap

Rep. Mike Jones (R-York) attended the hearing to learn more about the statewide gun violence problem and the strategy behind treating it as a public health crisis. The meeting was held in the Philadelphia district of Rep. Movita Johnson-Harrell (D-Philadelphia) and focused on homicides in urban areas.
 
Jones remained quiet through most of the three-plus hours that saw testimony from law enforcement officials, subject experts, community activists, and those who have lost loved ones to gun violence. As the afternoon session drew near an end, he spoke at length about how Democrats could engage Republicans to bring necessary solutions.
