This week in the top three events The PLS Reporter was joined by Department of Corrections Secretary, John Wetzel, to talk about recent turmoil in state prisons thought to be connected to synthetic drugs.

Also this week there were multiple public hearings and meetings including one about 
amending the older adults protective services act and another that looked into a bill that would bring state public sector union laws into line with the federal Janus ruling.

Senators focus on mental illness and opioid epidemic during Corrections budget hearing

Senate Appropriation Committee members focused on how the Department of Corrections (DOC) handles mentally ill inmates and inmates struggling with addiction during Thursday’s budget hearing.


DOC asked for an addition $2 million dollars in this year’s proposed budget.


According to DOC Sec. John Wetzel the extra $2 million would help to treat inmates with varying mental health issues.

The American Civil Liberties Union and Abolitionist Law Center suing Pennsylvania over solitary confinement practices in prisons

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Abolitionist Law Center are suing Pennsylvania for placing prisoners who have life sentences in solitary confinement anywhere from 22 to 24 hours per day.


The class-action lawsuit alleges that this practice is unconstitutional violating the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments.

Legislators express concerns about potential merger of Department of Corrections, Board of Probation and Parole in House committee hearing

The House Judiciary Committee held a public hearing Thursday to discuss another consolidation attempt from Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget proposal: the consolidation of the Department of the Department of Corrections and the Board of Probation and Parole.

This consolidation, under Senate Bill 522 and Senate Bill 523, would merge the two entities together, a system that a majority of other states use.
